DEBATE: IS ISLAM A RELIGION OF PEACE?

Most of us understand that terrorism proceeds from an extremist branch of Islam. The vast majority of 1.6 billion Muslims around the world live in peace through moderate interpretations of Islam. Imams consult with our pastors (and vice versa) to share common bonds of humanity. Most of us are horrified by prejudice, profiling, or worse, violence against our Muslim friends and neighbors for simply following their faith in a free society. At first, I was completely biased in favor of the motion of this debate. But the authoritative voices on this panel forced me to consider the warrior aspect of Islam alive today at the root of Islamic terrorism. All religions are vulnerable to the extremism, notwithstanding the tumultuous evolution of Christianity and its continued struggles with negative power. What’s next in the evolution of Islam? How will the reform movement take shape, and will it succeed? What is our role and responsibility as individuals to support the goals of both strength and peace? This fearless debate exposes one of the great and ever-expanding issues of our time: the anatomy of extremism.
